\nIceland 12 years ago to avoid the stress<\/strong><\/p>\n
\na small town, about 30 miles from Lublin or 180 miles directly to the south of
\nWarsaw. Michal is a warehouse manager and has worked for Samskip for over
\ntwelve years. <\/p>\n
\nchildren, a 17-year-old girl, a 16-year-old boy and another six-year-old boy
\nwho just started primary school and was born in Iceland. I came to Iceland to
\nlook for a better life and a better job. I had worked in Germany for one year and
\nhad an aunt in Iceland who suggested that we would try to come to Iceland. I
\ncame a year ahead of my family. Times were bad in Poland at that time – it was
\nhard to get work and the pay was low and therefore hard to live off of our wages
\neven though we were both working, \u201dsays Michal. It is common in Poland that
\ncontracts with workers are only extended a week at a time, which is a major
\nstress factor for Polish families.<\/p>\n
\npeople don\u2018t even stop for pedestrians<\/strong><\/p>\n
\njust smiles and says \u201cno no. You just stay inside the house and the weather
\ndoesn’t matter. When I moved here to Iceland the first thing I noticed was how
\nquiet Icelanders are. No one is screaming here and the time pressure is not as
\ngreat as in Poland. Here, just about everyone is happy if you are efficient. If
\nyou got a good job in Poland, you had to show more and more. There are really
\nhigh demands on people and a lot of stress and I’m not just talking about work.
\nThis can be seen on the streets of Poland. No one stops for pedestrians,
\neveryone is in a hurry. In Iceland, you see cars stopping for people at a
\npedestrian crossing and there is much more courtesy here. I think this is
\nrelated to Polish culture, but then I don’t know it as much as many other
\nPoles, because I was only three years in the labor market in Poland before I
\ncame to Iceland. In fact, I noticed this in Germany too. When there is a green
\nlight for pedestrians I have taught my boy that he must watch the cars
\ncarefully since they don\u2018t stop although it is a green light for pedestrians.
\nIt’s called something in Polish, but I don’t remember what. “<\/p>\n
\nfootball <\/strong><\/p>\n
\nchanged a lot for us in Poland. In 2005-2006 the Poles came to Iceland to a
\ngreater extent, but it has increased even greater. We have a good Polish
\ncommunity in Iceland. We watch for example football together and we rent a
\nplace to play football during winter time. In the summer we play outside. I am
\na goalkeeper myself and I watch Polish players in foreign teams like Juventus,
\nAC Milan and Bayern Munich \u2013 I don’t watch the English football as much as most
\npeople here in Iceland. We occasionally go to \u00d6lver bar to watch the match. So
\nit’s not just the co-workers but also friends that I have outside of work.
\n“<\/p>\n
\n“My wife has a brother who is also working in Iceland and we have a small
\nfamily here. However, we always try to go to Poland during our summer vacations
\nto meet mom and dad and the family – we try to get up to six weeks off. “<\/p>\n
\nin Iceland now,” says Michal, laughing. “But we go to the cottage a
\nlot, especially the one that Samskip owns. We have also travelled all over
\nIceland. We have driven around Iceland three times and we have explored the
\nwhole country apart from the Westman Islands. I like H\u00fasav\u00edk and Dj\u00fapavogur and
\nit is great fun to travel around the Westfjords. Egilssta\u00f0ir and Sey\u00f0isfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur are
\nalso beautiful. There are many beautiful things in Iceland for foreigners – the
\nonly thing I do not think is nice to drive from Keflavik to Reykjavik. The \u00a0view everywhere else in Iceland is stunning. Well
\nit is actually not very exciting to drive to Akureyri either. But the other way
\nis very beautiful, east.<\/p>\n
\nSamskip Transport School<\/strong><\/p>\n
\nare two, a loss manager and a receptionist and we actually mix this up a little
\nbit because we both work both jobs. Reception and collection workers do this
\ntoo, as everyone is trying to work as one big family. There are a lot of
\nforeigners, not many Icelanders, unfortunately, probably a lot of Icelanders
\nwho have moved into tourism now, \u201dsays Michal. “However, I started working
\non the platform and then went to the Samskip transport school and after the
\ntransport school I went to the warehouse and have worked my way up there – I
\nthink I started as foreman in 2011. The transport school was very useful and
\nthe first project was to learn more Icelandic – this must be the first project
\nof all foreigners who move to Iceland I think \u2013 to learn more Icelandic. It
\nmakes a lot of difference when you start speaking. I can also speak German and
\nRussian quite well and it sometimes comes in handy at work. “<\/p>\n
\nand attends the annual festival with his friends. One problem, however, is
\nthat, as is often the case, the canteen says Michal while showing a picture of
\nhimself 40 kilos lighter. “I should go more often to the gym, but I have
\nbeen working a lot to save up for an apartment and now we are thinking of
\nbuying another car. Therefore I would rather work than go to the gym. We live
\nin Brei\u00f0holt and bought an apartment there two years ago, but it can be
\ndifficult for foreigners to buy an apartment here, actually it is difficult for
\neveryone, I think, but we were lucky. “<\/p>\n
