Tailor-made end-to-end warehousing solutions

At the logistics hub, Samskip’s international and domestic networks come together, and the facility plays a key role in integrating these systems. Shipments to and from Iceland handled by Samskip or Jónar Transport pass through the hub, as do all consignments managed by Samskip’s domestic division, which provides nationwide transport and distribution in the capital area. In addition, thousands of pallets pass through the facility each year for direct storage.

Samskip offers tailor-made, end-to-end warehousing solutions that support the flow of goods from receipt to delivery. At our warehouse in Kjalarvogur, we handle warehousing, order processing, picking, and domestic transport, all according to our customers’ needs.

Our service representatives provide personalized service and oversee the receipt of goods, registration, delivery, and daily operations. They also manage document archiving, sorting, and preparation of customs documents and other accompanying paperwork, ensuring efficient and seamless processes.

We offer comprehensive solutions for both import handling and general warehousing. Customers can withdraw shipments in full or in parts, with or without domestic delivery, depending on what best suits their operations at any given time. Companies storing goods with us can also take advantage of order picking based on electronic orders, for example, for grocery stores or distribution to multiple retail locations, along with organized distribution to designated destinations.

Hub for flow and distribution

Samskip’s warehouse plays a key role in the company’s transport network and serves as the central hub where international and domestic transport meet. Here, we integrate systems and processes to ensure efficient shipment flows, improved visibility, and faster handling.

All shipments to and from Iceland handled by Samskip and Jónar Transport pass through the warehouse, as do all domestic consignments managed by Samskip, which provides nationwide transport and distribution in the capital area. This integration creates a strong link between international transport routes and domestic distribution.

In addition to the transit of shipments, the warehouse also plays an important role in warehousing operations. Thousands of pallets pass through the facility annually for direct storage, with a strong focus on organization, safety, and efficient handling of goods at every stage.

We offer, among other things, the following services:

  • Warehouse: Storage of goods in Samskip’s 7,500 m² warehouse

  • Customs area: Duty-free customs zone within the warehouse

  • Pharmaceutical storage: Specially designed and certified facilities for the handling and storage of pharmaceuticals

  • Dangerous goods: Dedicated storage facilities for materials requiring special handling

  • Container receiving and unloading: From import into the country to handling, onward transport, and distribution

  • Order picking: Fulfillment of goods from stock to customers according to their requirements

  • Domestic transport: Terminals and transport services throughout the country

More about the service

The warehouse stores goods of all sizes and types, whether general dry goods, frozen goods, chilled goods, or dangerous goods. A variety of storage compartments ensures that goods are stored in suitable units, helping to reduce storage costs.

Both customs-cleared and uncleared goods are stored in the warehouse, providing flexibility for importers who can choose to clear only part of a shipment through customs as needed.

The main benefit for customers using Samskip’s warehousing services is reduced capital tied up, as customers pay only for the space and services they use instead of bearing the fixed costs associated with owning and operating their own facilities.

Costs therefore align with the scale of operations at any given time. Seasonal fluctuations are common in many industries, and customers do not need to pay for unused space during quieter periods.

All goods passing through the warehouse are barcoded and scanned into the system. Barcoding improves traceability, ensures reliable inventory control, and minimizes shrinkage.

A powerful information system enables customers to monitor inventory status in real time and submit electronic orders directly to us.

Goods are received into storage either as imports or from domestic suppliers. The goods are received and placed into storage (storage locations).

Goods are then either delivered directly from storage locations (full pallets) or picked from picking locations (cases, individual units) and assembled onto pallets for delivery.

Goods arrive from the supplier on a single pallet and are delivered to multiple predefined locations using a so-called “Put to Store” system, where the pallet is split among the customer’s delivery points.

Goods arrive at the warehouse on pallets, where each pallet has a designated recipient (cross-docking), and are then delivered to the appropriate delivery location.

The warehouse provides various additional services such as product labeling, packaging (into larger packages or combining multiple products into one package), product assembly (e.g. grills), and more.
