Central hub for logistics and distribution

Samskip’s warehouse plays a key role in the company’s logistics network, serving as the central hub where international and domestic transport flows converge. Here, we integrate systems and processes to ensure efficient shipment flow, improved visibility, and faster handling.

All shipments to and from Iceland with Samskip and Jónar Transport pass through the warehouse, along with all domestic shipments handled by Samskip’s nationwide network, which provides transport across the country and distribution throughout the capital area. This integration creates a strong link between international transport routes and domestic distribution.

In addition to serving as a transit hub, the warehouse also plays a vital role in warehousing operations. Thousands of pallets are handled and stored annually, with a strong focus on organization, security, and efficient goods handling at every stage.

We offer, among others, the following services:

  • Warehousing: Storage of goods in Samskip’s 7,500 m² warehouse
  • Customs Zone: Duty-free area within the warehouse
  • Pharmaceutical Storage:Purpose-built and certified facilities for the handling and storage of medicines
  • Dangerous Goods: Specialized storage facilities for materials requiring special handling
  • Container Reception and Unloading: From import arrival, handling, onward transport, and distribution
  • Order Picking: Fulfillment of goods from stock to customers according to their requirements
  • Domestic Transport: Service terminals and nationwide delivery

Our warehouse stores goods of all sizes and types, whether general dry goods, frozen goods, chilled goods, or dangerous goods. A variety of storage compartments ensures that each product is stored in the most suitable location, helping to reduce storage costs.

Both customs-cleared and uncleared goods are stored in the warehouse, providing flexibility for importers who can choose to clear parts of their shipments as needed.

A key benefit for customers using Samskip’s warehousing services is reduced capital tied up in facilities, as customers only pay for the space and services they use—rather than fixed costs associated with owning and operating their own premises.

This means costs scale with the level of activity at any given time. Many industries experience seasonal fluctuations, and customers do not need to pay for unused space during off-peak periods.

All goods entering the warehouse are barcoded and scanned into the system. Barcoding improves traceability, ensures accurate inventory control, and minimizes shrinkage.

Our advanced information system enables customers to monitor inventory levels in real time and submit electronic orders directly to us.

Goods are received into storage either through imports or from domestic suppliers. The goods are checked in and placed into storage compartments.

Goods are then either dispatched directly from storage compartments (full pallets) or picked from picking locations (cases, individual units) and assembled into one or more pallets for delivery.

Goods arrive from the supplier on a single pallet and are delivered to multiple predefined locations using a “put-to-store” system, where the pallet is broken down and allocated to the customer’s designated service locations.

Goods arrive at the warehouse on pallets, where each pallet is assigned to a specific consignee (cross-docking) and then delivered to the appropriate delivery location.

The warehouse also provides a range of additional services, such as product labeling, packaging (into larger units or combining multiple items into a single package), product assembly (e.g., grills), and more.
